Our History

James Scott began his career in the highway contracting industry as a summer worker with the Kentucky Department of Transportation (KYDOT) as a member of the survey crew in Russellville, KY.

Later in 1957, he graduated from the University of Engineering Technology course sponsored by the KYDOT at Russellville as an engineer. In 1966 he accepted a job with R.E. Gaddie, Inc. a paving contractor. In 1972 Scotty purchased the paving business from Mr. Gaddie and started what is now known as Scotty’s Contracting & Stone, LLC.

Over the past 40 years, Scotty has continually served as a mentor to many. At one time, Scotty’s included a concrete and utility division. Scotty made the decision to focus on road construction and paving, and as a result, helped two of his employees branch out with their own businesses. Those two companies are now Scott & Murphy, Inc. (Mike Murphy) and Scott & Ritter (Larkin Ritter). Both of these companies have developed into large successful companies.

Scotty has served in numerous leadership positions in industry associations and community organizations. Most recently he was recognized by his peers with a Life Member award from the Kentucky Association of Highway Contractors.
