Begin Experience

Heavy Civil

As one of Kentucky’s leading contractors, Scotty’s specializes in complex civil construction projects that serve our communities every day. A typical project starts with our engineering teams taking a detailed approach to planning our work using the latest survey and design technology to ensure complete accuracy in the field.
We thoroughly examine and evaluate each element of a project and its associated cost. Then, drawing on that information, we develop alternative construction solutions that increase the overall project value—either through cost savings, improved quality, enhanced durability, or a combination of all three.

Quarry & Mining

Scotty’s Contracting & Stone is a leading supplier of aggregates and stone materials in Kentucky, operating seven surface quarries and two underground mines within the state. We use in-depth testing methods to ensure the quality of our materials and take controlled measures to wash and clean materials for asphalt production.
Our mining division operates in connection with our project teams to supply high-quality aggregate products when needed. Our in-house supply chain enables us to save our clients time and money in the production of high-quality asphalt products.

Asphalt Production

Scotty’s Contracting & Stone is Kentucky’s leading producer of asphalt, operating 16 hot-mix plants strategically located across the state to fulfill our project needs and provide quality materials to our customers.
Our asphalt plant teams order premium aggregates directly from our quarry mining division to help guarantee on-time production, mix specification, and overall quality. When our customers place orders for hot-mix asphalt, we’re able to secure the material quickly needed to produce even large quantities of product. This means projects aren’t stalled waiting on materials but instead move quickly toward completion.

Hauling

TS Trucking, a division of Scotty’s Contracting & Stone, hauls aggregate, asphalt, and dirt material in support of all paving and construction operations. In-house delivery methods help vertically integrate our company for streamlined performance and responsiveness.
When other companies order materials—whether it’s stone from the quarry, or a load of asphalt from the plant—they’re dependent on the hauling company they subcontracted to be reliable and responsive. Because Scotty’s controls hauling in-house, we communicate faster to deliver on time, every time.

Asphalt Paving

Scotty’s Contracting & Stone is recognized as one of Kentucky’s premier contractors for asphalt paving services. We pave hundreds of miles of high-quality asphalt each year providing smooth, durable roads used by Kentucky and Tennessee residents to get where they need to go.
Our asphalt paving teams communicate closely with our heavy civil project teams, asphalt production plant, quality control team, and hauling division to ensure the smoothest, most durable roadway surface at the end of the day. Our vertically integrated operations are at the heart of our guaranteed quality.

Vertical Integration

Our operations are structured to allow us control of every stage of a project's delivery—starting with design and including everything down to the production of materials like aggregates and asphalt. Vertical integration of our divisions helps us streamline the entire construction process and ensure quality every step of the way.

Our teams across all six divisions communicate closely to address challenges early and avoid costly project delays. This approach helps to ensure on-time material delivery, improve accuracy in the field, and guarantee overall quality of services.

Quality Materials

We understand the importance of quality aggregate and stone materials. Everything in the construction process starts with and depends on the durability of the rock used to lay base course and produce asphalt. That’s why we’re committed to supplying Kentucky with the highest quality aggregate and stone materials available.

Scotty’s uses in-depth, industry leading methods for testing our aggregate quality. Our mining operations communicate closely with our quality control technicians to identify high quality material sources, and we take controlled measures to wash and clean materials used for asphalt production.

Value Engineering

Our project teams are formed by engineering experts equipped with the latest survey and design technology to provide the greatest value to our civil construction projects.

We thoroughly examine and evaluate each element of a project and its associated cost. Then, drawing on that information, we communicate with the design team and project owner to find alternative construction solutions or materials that increase the overall project value—either through cost savings, improved quality, enhanced durability, or a combination of all three.

Technology

3D Project Engineering

Our construction process begins in our engineering room, where our team uses drone images and CAD software to render 3-dimensional images of all project sites. Models are accurate to within a quarter-inch of the actual location, resulting in precision measurements of material and scheduling.

Our teams use these comprehensive models to engineer the most efficient construction methods for faster results at reduced costs to the project owner.

GPS Machine Control

From the engineering room to the project site, early-stage construction begins with connecting our field teams and equipment with the 3D design plans. All major heavy machinery is equipped with GPS devices which interpret project plans and ensure accurate execution.

This digital connection not only ensures that our work in the field accurately reflects the project design, it is also a valuable real-time communication tool which allows our field teams to respond quickly to any project design changes that may occur.

Quarry Testing

Once a roadway project is accurately graded, the next step typically involves laying a base course of aggregate stone material. Scotty’s uses in-depth, industry leading methods for testing our aggregate quality. Our mining operations communicate closely with our quality control technicians to identify high quality material sources, and we take controlled measures to wash and clean materials used for asphalt production.

Mix Design

Scotty’s owns and operates a state-of-the-art design and testing laboratory as part of its Quality Control division. Our lab earned accreditation from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) in 2021 in recognition of our commitment to quality.

Accredited labs undergo third-party assessments to evaluate the ability to perform quality control tests with high levels of accuracy and precision. As an accredited lab, Scotty’s is qualified to design and produce mixes for airports and other tightly regulated projects.

3D Milling & Paving

When it comes time to lay the final surface on a roadway project, our asphalt paving teams use advanced tools to help ensure the smoothest, most durable surfaces in the state. We outfit our milling and paving machines with 3D devices also known as Automated Machine Guidance technology (AMG).

These control the vertical position of a machine’s components and will automatically adjust elevation and slope to match exact specifications of any project—resulting in less wasted material, more cost savings, and better accuracy of the final product.

Safety

Safety That Works

At Scotty’s, we believe that in order for a safety policy to be effective it must be three things: simple, actionable, and teachable. We’ve formed an award-winning safety culture by adhering to those principles, which has helped protect our employees and the general public on hundreds of projects during our history.

Throughout our company, the work performed in each of our operational divisions has its own unique safety risks. To address them, we regularly train and educate our team members with OSHA-certified curriculum. Additionally, we conduct daily Jobsite Safety Analysis (JSA) meetings and thoroughly inspect our facilities to identify and address safety hazards in those environments. We continually evaluate our safety culture to ensure the protection of our valued team members and the public.
